The gift recipient is the person for whom the gift was purchased. The gift sender is the person who purchased the gift.

We're currently testing out a new feature on Cratejoy.com for our gifting offering that allows your gift recipient to keep their subscription active - on subscriptions that were purchased for them as a gift.

The gift recipient is the person for whom the gift was purchased. The gift sender is the person who purchased the gift.

Gift subscriptions on Cratejoy are purchased by a gift sender on behalf of a gift recipient.

For example: To celebrate his sister's birthday, Jack (the gift sender) purchases a gift on Cratejoy for his sister Jill (the gift recipient).

Jack selects a box on Cratejoy that he thinks his sister would like, and Jill receives the box in the mail from Jack.

Jill is so impressed with the gift that Jack bought for her, and she turns out to love the box so much that she wants to keep subscribing.

Well - now Jill can keep her subscription going with subscription handoff.

To put it in defined terms - the Gift Recipient can now keep their subscription going if the Gift Sender does not want to keep paying.

How does subscription handoff work?
Once a Gift Sender's subscription is no longer active, Cratejoy sends an email notification to the Gift Recipient prompting them to keep their subscription active.

The Gift Recipient then goes through a simplified version of the checkout process aimed at allowing them to keep their subscription active.

What does the subscription handoff email look like?
The Subscription Handoff Email includes the main image from your Cratejoy listing, some quick details about the subscription, and button to direct them to keep their subscription going.

Example:

When does the email notification go out to the gift recipient
First, we'll need to understand the options that a Gift Sender has when purchasing a subscription.

A gift sender has a few options which they can select on checkout:

  • By default, Gift Subscriptions do not auto-renew
    • This means the gift sender pays for a subscription that ends once it comes to the end of it's term
  • The Gift Sender can select to have their purchase auto-renew
    • In this case, the gift sender will be charged again automatically once the subscription reaches the end of it's term

For subscriptions that do not auto-renew

  • We'll send the subscription handoff email to the Gift Recipient 10-days before the Gift Sender's subscription term is set to expire.
    • This will give your gift recipients enough time to take over the subscription and keep it active before it expires

For subscriptions that do auto-renew

  • We'll send the subscription handoff email to the Gift Recipient once the subcription has either been cancelled by the Gift Sender or has expired because the Gift Sender's payment method failed.

Where does Subscription Handoff work?
Please note: Currently - Subscription Handoff works for Gift Subscription orders placed through your Cratejoy listing.

We're doing this to test the conversion rates on these emails and make ensure that we build the best experience before releasing it for storefronts.

What happens to a customer from subscription handoff?
After a gift recipient successfully pays for their subscription, they will receive a new Subscription ID.

The Gift Sender's subscription status will change to cancelled or expired depending on whether they cancelled it or allowed it to expire.

The transferred subscription will now create a new subscription within Cratejoy. We're in the process of building a few extra things that will make it more clear when a subscription has been transferred.
