What is Gifting 3?
Gifting 3 is Cratejoy’s new gifting feature; a direct evolution built upon the foundation of Gifting 2. Previously, a gift subscription would auto-renew in the exact same manner as a standard subscription. Gifting 3 puts the power in your hands, allowing you to choose the behavior of gift subscriptions: whether they always renew, never renew, or whether to ask the purchaser on checkout if the subscription should renew. This document will outline the Gifting 3-related changes you'll see, both in the Merchant Portal and on your live site.
The settings which control how gifts function can be found under Settings -> Checkout in the Merchant Portal.
Gifting 3 most notably impacts two areas of your site: the Checkout page, and the Customer Account page. The exact behavior depends upon the gift setting you select, as shown below:
If you select ‘Always Renew’:
The purchaser can choose whether to receive a renewal notification, automatically sent at the start of the cutoff window prior to the subscription's renewal.
If you select ‘Ask on Checkout’:
The purchaser now chooses the behavior. The "1 delivery, auto-renewing" text will automatically change to "1 delivery, will not renew" should the purchaser select a non-renewing gift.
If you select ‘Never Renew’:
The checkout page reflects that gift subscriptions on your store do not renew.
Customer Account Page
The main customer account page has been updated to accommodate non-renewing gift subscriptions. As the image above illustrates, both renewing and non-renewing gifts are clearly marked, and non-renewing gifts have an expiration date rather than a renewal date.
Editing a Gift Subscription
Under the hood, a renewing gift subscription is largely identical to a standard renewing subscription, and as such it can be edited through the customer account page, as shown below:
Of course, as with a standard subscription, any changes made here will not take effect immediately, but will take effect at the subscription's next renewal.
A non-renewing gift has comparatively limited options:
Because changing your product, changing your term, skipping your next renewal, and canceling your subscription do not apply to non-renewing gifts we have hidden these buttons. Instead only modifiable fields will be displayed, including shipping address and any variants available on your product.
Non-renewing subscriptions will never reflect as churn in your dashboard.
Like the Customer Account page, your subscription view will now contain a field indicating whether or not a gift is renewing, and “renews on” will switch to “expires on” if the gift is not renewing.
In three areas of the Merchant Portal, Analytics -> Cancellations, Shipping, and Subscriptions, the filters for gifting will now also allow you to specify whether you want to see renewing, non renewing, or all gifts.
Any data export which included the “Gift” field will also include another field titled “Will Renew." This includes Shipments, Subscriptions, and All Transactions.
